Military retirees protest pension adjustments in Abuja
Retired Nigerian military personnel staged a protest in Abuja on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, demanding the implementation of consequential pension adjustments. The veterans, led by retired Colonel Innocent Azubike, argued that recent salary increases approved by President Bola Tinubu for serving personnel should also apply to retirees to prevent pay disparities between different ranks and service years.
The demonstration drew a heavy security presence near the Ministry of Defence, including the Nigerian Army, Police, and various other agencies, resulting in traffic congestion and cordoned-off areas. While some confrontations were reported as protesters attempted to reach the ministry, the planned mass demonstration was ultimately suspended.
Following a meeting between veteran representatives and Ministry of Defence officials, the protest was called off. The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, represented by Permanent Secretary Richard Pheelangwah, assured the retirees that the government is working with military, pension, and financial authorities to develop a sustainable and fair resolution for their welfare and remuneration concerns.
