In August 2026, various groups of retirees in Nigeria began escalating demands for improved financial welfare and unpaid benefits. By August 24, the Coalition of Federal Pensioners of Nigeria issued a 21-day ultimatum to the federal government, demanding N150,000 in outstanding palliative allowances to mitigate economic hardships. On August 31, the unrest expanded in Lagos, where members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme demonstrated at the Lagos State Government Secretariat in Alausa. Protesters demanded pension enhancements, wage awards, and outstanding benefits. The situation became tense as police deployed tear gas to disperse the group.

Following the Lagos demonstration, civil society organizations and human rights lawyer Femi Falana called for an investigation into the use of force against elderly citizens. Alex Omotehinse, President of the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR), questioned if the state government authorized the use of force. Conversely, the Lagos State Police Command denied the allegations, calling them ‘false and misleading.’ Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi stated the protest concluded without incident and alleged that a viral photograph depicting pensioners being tear-gassed was ‘AI-generated.’
