Milkwood flowers pose allergy and respiratory risks in Vietnam
The strong scent and pollen of the Alstonia scholaris, commonly known as milkwood flower, can trigger allergic reactions, headaches, and breathing difficulties. This species is widely distributed in Vietnam, particularly in northern provinces.
According to practitioner Bui Dac Sang of the Hanoi Traditional Medicine Association, the intense fragrance and airborne pollen can be particularly hazardous for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, or allergic conjunctivitis. Symptoms may include itching, rashes, dizziness, and headaches when exposed to high concentrations of the scent.
Sensitive individuals are advised to limit direct contact with blooming trees, avoid standing under their canopies for extended periods, and leave areas where the scent is overwhelming. Additionally, caution is advised regarding the plant's bark, as high doses can be toxic.
