Czech government approves 2027 budget with 386 billion CZK deficit

The Czech government has approved a 2027 state budget proposal featuring a 386 billion CZK deficit, which is approximately 3 billion CZK lower than the previous August draft. This deficit represents the second-largest in the country's history. The budget includes provisions for increasing public-sector wages by 5 to 9 percent and rising spending on education and pensions.

To support seniors, the government approved a pension valorization that will increase the average old-age pension to 22,196 CZK. Additionally, retirees will receive a one-time extraordinary payment of 2,000 CZK. President Petr Pavel has criticized the high level of the deficit, noting that the reduction does not change the overall scale of the debt.

Regarding energy and fuel, the government is preparing measures to combat rising fuel prices, with specific details to be announced following a cabinet meeting. The state will also resume daily regulation of maximum fuel prices starting October 1 and will reduce the consumption tax on diesel. Meanwhile, Czech gas storage levels are currently at 74 percent capacity, which remains above the EU average.
