Minas Gerais bans betting ads in state public spaces and Mineirão

The Government of Minas Gerais has issued a decree prohibiting the advertising, promotion, and sponsorship of betting platforms (bets) in state-owned public spaces. This measure includes stadiums, highways, airports, and public buildings. The decree specifically impacts the Mineirão stadium, where the football club Cruzeiro plays its home matches.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has officially notified Cruzeiro regarding the potential impact on commercial obligations for national competitions like the Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil. The CBF emphasized that clubs are responsible for ensuring arena spaces allow for the execution of contractual commercial properties.

Governor Mateus Simões stated that the measure aims to protect the population from the social and financial impacts of gambling. While the ban affects advertising on panels, screens, and banners within the stadium, Simões assured Cruzeiro fans that the club will continue to play at the Mineirão, noting that a transition period will be established to accommodate existing contracts.

The National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) has announced it will challenge the constitutionality of the decree in the Supreme Federal Court, arguing that the state is overstepping its authority and interfering with federal regulations.
