Minas Gerais mayors push financial reforms as Brasília de Minas starts 50‑home housing project
On 3 July, the municipal government of Brasília de Minas signed a service order to build 50 popular‑housing units in the Nova Brasília 2 neighbourhood under the national "Minha Casa, Minha Vida" program. Mayor Dr. Marcus Vinícius highlighted the project as a milestone for the city's housing deficit, with the municipal social assistance and public works secretaries present.
Later in the week, about 300 mayors from Minas Gerais are scheduled to travel to Brasília for a two‑day campaign organised by the Minas Gerais Municipal Association (AMM) and the National Confederation of Municipalities (CNM). The delegation will press federal deputies to approve two constitutional amendments: PEC 253/2016, which would let municipalities directly challenge unfunded legislative mandates at the Supreme Court, and PEC 231/2019, which would increase the municipalities' share of the Municipal Participation Fund. The mayors argue that recent “pautas‑bomba” laws impose new expenses on local governments without providing financing, threatening municipal budgets.
