Cemig launches solar discount program for 1 million Minas Gerais families

The Minas Gerais state government and utility Cemig announced a new scheme that offers up to a 26% reduction on electricity bills for low‑consumption residential customers. The program, called “Economia para os Mineiros,” targets roughly one million households whose monthly consumption is up to R$ 300. Participants join Cemig SIM, a solar‑by‑subscription service, by submitting an online form and receiving energy credits generated by the state's solar plants, which are deducted from their bills.

Governor Mateus Simões said the initiative is aimed at families with tighter budgets and at strengthening Minas Gerais’ photovoltaic supply chain, which already supplies about 40% of Brazil’s solar power. By scaling up purchases of locally produced solar energy, Cemig hopes to secure better contracts, lower operating costs and expand its customer base, while the discount structure remains unchanged despite tariff fluctuations.

The digital enrollment process requires a recent electricity bill, identification, and an electronic signature. Households exceeding the R$ 300 threshold can still join but will receive the standard 16% discount offered by Cemig SIM.
