Mindanao earthquake kills 14 and injures over 100 in the Philippines

A magnitude‑7.8 quake struck Mindanao on Monday, killing 14 people, leaving seven missing and injuring more than a hundred. The tremor caused extensive damage to schools, government buildings and shopping centres, and triggered over 130 aftershocks, some reaching magnitude 6.7.

Authorities reported that roughly 10,000 families live in the hardest‑hit areas. The Department of Education halted classes for over 6,200 schools, affecting about 3.2 million students as the new school year began. The General Santos international airport cancelled 17 flights, and power and telecommunications services were disrupted in several districts. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said emergency teams are coordinating response and disaster monitoring across the affected zones.
