Mindanao earthquake kills over 40, injures hundreds and displaces thousands

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off Sarangani in Mindanao on June 8, 2026. The disaster has caused more than 40 deaths, four people missing and hundreds of injuries. Over 77,000 residents across Mindanao have been affected, and more than 2,000 aftershocks, some as strong as magnitude 6.4, have been recorded.

Relief and rescue operations are underway, with national and local agencies assessing damage to power facilities, public buildings and health centres. Classes and government services in several areas remain suspended while electricity restoration is coordinated. In response, Calamba City in Laguna has been placed under a "heightened alert," activating emergency teams and preparedness measures to protect life and property.

Authorities continue to conduct safety inspections, provide emergency assistance, and compile situation reports as the region recovers from the quake.
