Mindanao, Philippines earthquake kills dozens and displaces thousands

A magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao, Philippines on 8 June, causing major damage and loss of life. Official death tolls rose to 55, with 31 people still missing and more than 480 injured. Around 45 000 residents were forced to evacuate to temporary shelters, and over 1 000 public schools were affected, suspending classes in many areas.

Rescue operations have been hampered by heavy rain, ongoing aftershocks—over 2 000 recorded, some up to magnitude 6.4—and damaged roads and bridges that isolate remote communities. Helicopters are delivering food, water and medical supplies, while the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies highlighted the challenges of reaching isolated villages. The Philippine government pledged 100 million pesos for rebuilding efforts, and humanitarian agencies are providing clean water, food, sanitation, emergency medical care and psychosocial support to survivors.
