Mindanao, Philippines earthquake leaves 16 dead, 200 injured

A shallow magnitude‑7.8 earthquake struck offshore Sarangani Bay near General Santos City on Mindanao, Philippines, on 8 June 2026. The tremor caused buildings to collapse and severely damaged the international airport, leading to the cancellation of 17 domestic flights and injuries to schoolchildren during flag‑raising ceremonies.

At least 16 people were confirmed dead and more than 200 were injured. A tsunami of roughly one metre hit the coast of General Santos and generated smaller waves that reached parts of Indonesia, Palau and southern Japan. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced emergency measures and pledged that the national government would not abandon Mindanao as relief operations begin.
