Mindanao, Philippines hit by 7.8‑magnitude quake, tsunami alerts trigger regional evacuation

On 9 June 2026 a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Mindanao region in southern Philippines. The shaking caused the collapse of numerous commercial and residential structures, disrupted power and telecommunications, and left many people injured or trapped under rubble. Emergency responders, including civilian and military teams, began clearing debris and searching for survivors while hospitals dealt with a surge of casualties.

Because of the earthquake’s size and the coastal location, authorities activated emergency tsunami protocols for the Philippines and issued a precautionary tsunami alert for the southeast coast of Japan. Residents were urged to move to higher ground, and evacuation centers were set up for thousands of families.
