Mindanao, Philippines hit by two major quakes, one killing 15 and prompting tsunami alerts

On 8 June 2026 a magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck offshore the island of Mindanao, about 58 km from General Santos city, at a depth of 57 km. No injuries or damage were reported.

Earlier, on 24 May 2026 a magnitude 7.8 quake hit southern Mindanao, killing at least 15 people and injuring more than 100. The tremor was centered 26 km southwest of Kablayan at a depth of about 35 km and was followed by strong aftershocks, the largest measuring 6.5. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned of possible tsunami waves exceeding one metre along nine coastal districts, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea.
