Mindfulness and breathing techniques offer effective stress management
Various mindfulness and breathing techniques are being highlighted as effective tools for managing stress and improving mental well-being through short, daily practices.
Specific methods include Ujjayi breathing, also known as ocean breathing, which involves narrowing the glottis to create a gentle friction sound. This technique aims to activate the vagus nerve, lower heart rate, and improve concentration. Similarly, the 4-7-8 breathing technique—inhaling for 4 seconds, holding for 7, and exhaling for 8—is noted for its ability to slow adrenaline production.
Research by psychologist Eli Susman suggests that even extremely brief interventions can be effective. A study involving 135 students found that a daily 20-second practice of self-compassion involving physical touch could improve emotional well-being and reduce stress. The findings emphasize that consistency in practice is more critical for psychological benefits than the duration of each individual session.
Other sensory approaches, such as the 5-4-3-2-1 method or shifting attention to external surroundings like looking out a window, are also recommended to break cycles of anxiety and ground the individual in the present moment.
