Vitoria-Gasteiz advances housing and urban projects under Mayor Maider Etxebarria

The municipal council of Vitoria-Gasteiz has begun processing more than half a dozen applications to convert office buildings and an agricultural pavilion into residential units, following the new General Urban Plan that allows the city to generate housing beyond new construction. Mayor Maider Etxebarria indicated the plan reserves land for around 22,000 homes and aims to broaden options for urban dwelling.

Etxebarria also highlighted a series of ongoing initiatives, including the expansion of the tram network, the completion of the Izaskun Arrue cultural centre, upgrades to the central police station, a housing agreement with the Basque Government, renovations of the main theatre, the José Mardones industrial area, the Goya gas station, and the wine campus. She framed these measures as part of a positive, forward‑looking agenda to improve the quality of life for residents.

The mayor’s remarks underscore Vitoria‑Gasteiz’s push for sustainable, compact growth, stressing that the city is advancing in industry, public services, and international visibility while addressing pending challenges in security, cleanliness, vandalism, and sustainability.
