Latin American mining sector faces environmental and social challenges
Mining operations across Latin America are facing diverse regulatory, environmental, and social challenges. In Peru, Anglo American’s Quellaveco mine reported zero social conflicts in 2026 and received The Copper Mark certification for responsible production. Conversely, Compañía Minera Poderosa has accumulated S/ 314 million in environmental fines, and a tailings dam collapse occurred at the AFC-20 unit in Puno, raising alarms about water contamination in the Ramis River basin.
Expansion and remediation efforts are also underway. Rio2 Limited received approval to expand the Condestable mine in Cañete, while Cerro de Pasco Resources is advancing plans to reprocess tailings at the Quiulacocha project. Meanwhile, authorities in Panama are inspecting the Donoso mining project to ensure compliance with water protection and reforestation commitments.
Climate-related risks are also prominent. In Chile, the town of Tocopilla has mandated masks due to dust from climate-related emergencies and potential ash contamination. In Peru, officials are preparing for the El Niño phenomenon, with focus on infrastructure in Piura and managing potential droughts and floods in regions like Arequipa and Puno.
