Mining Remediation Authority leads response to Scottish ground‑movement evacuation

The Mining Remediation Authority (MRA) has taken control of the response to ground movement that forced the evacuation of 97 homes in Coalsnaughton, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. The authority is working with the Scottish government, Clackmannanshire Council and the Local Resilience Partnership to support displaced residents, with the UK government covering the costs of making homes safe and offering to purchase severely damaged properties at pre‑incident market value. Energy Minister Michael Shanks said the government will ensure no household bears the burden alone, while MRA chief operations director Carl Banton emphasized the priority of safety and long‑term certainty for affected families.

Separately, the MRA is preparing a four‑year, £9.4 million professional services framework to procure construction, environmental and technical expertise across the UK. The framework, running from June 2027 to June 2031, will be divided into four lots covering mine‑water treatment and civil engineering, ecology and environmental services, treatability studies, and consultancy, planning and delivery oversight. The procurement aims to support the MRA’s core purpose of protecting the environment and improving communities in former mining areas.
