Mining strikes and mediation efforts emerge at Chilean copper operations

Major mining operations in Chile's Antofagasta region are facing labor disruptions as unions at different companies move toward or initiate strikes following failed negotiations.

At BHP’s Escondida mine, the company has requested mediation from the Labor Inspection to prevent a strike involving more than 900 supervisors and staff members. The union recently rejected a company offer that included $23.5 million in benefits, citing concerns over labor conditions and the implementation of multi-functionality in contracts. A strike vote was approved by 94.8% of those who participated.

Meanwhile, at Minera Centinela, an operation owned by Antofagasta Minerals, unions representing workers at Minera Esperanza and Distrito Centinela began a strike on Wednesday. The walkout follows the failure of mandatory mediation. The unions claim the company refused to address pay and benefit disparities between different worker groups, which they describe as discriminatory. Antofagasta Minerals has denied these claims, stating that differences in collective agreements result from previous negotiations and specific process characteristics.
