Chilean copper mining labor strikes
Overview
Labor disruptions have emerged at major copper mining operations in Chile’s Antofagasta region. At BHP’s Escondida mine, the company sought mediation from the Labor Inspection after a union rejected a $23.5 million benefits package, following a strike vote approved by 94.8% of participants.
Simultaneously, unions at Minera Centinela, owned by Antofagasta Minerals, initiated a strike after mandatory mediation failed. Workers at Minera Esperanza and Distrito Centinela alleged that the company failed to address discriminatory pay and benefit disparities. While the unions proceeded with the walkout, Antofagasta Minerals maintained that differences in collective agreements were the result of previous negotiations and specific process characteristics. The company has stated that projected production is not expected to be affected by the strike.
