Erhan Arıklı dismissed following Girne maritime accident

Following a major maritime accident off the coast of Girne, Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has dismissed the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Erhan Arıklı. The dismissal is intended to facilitate an unhindered investigation by police and judicial authorities into the incident.

Search and rescue operations, supported by the Republic of Türkiye and involving Turkish Navy vessels TCG Işın and TCG Alemdar, are ongoing. The death toll has risen to 12, with 16 individuals still reported missing. Previous investigations led to the arrest of nine officials, including the ship's captain.

Erhan Arıklı has indicated he will apply to the Assembly to lift his parliamentary immunity to ensure judicial processes can proceed if he is found to hold legal responsibility for the accident.
