Northern Cyprus ferry disaster: Minister dismissed

Overview

Following a fatal ferry disaster off the coast of Kyrenia, labor unions and professional organizations in Northern Cyprus have demanded accountability and transparency. Metin Atan, President of the KAMUSEN union, specifically called for the resignation of Erhan Arıklı, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, arguing that condolences and investigations alone are insufficient. Atan demanded full public disclosure regarding the vessel’s technical condition, maintenance history, inspections, and seaworthiness permits, while calling for an independent investigation into the Ministry and other oversight institutions.

Other groups, including Tel-Sen and the Cyprus Turkish Medical Association, joined the calls for an investigation. Tel-Sen President Hakan Üredi questioned whether authorities had addressed previous passenger complaints against the operating company, noting that such disasters often occur when warnings are ignored.

In response to the growing pressure and the scale of the tragedy, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has dismissed Minister Erhan Arıklı. The dismissal is intended to facilitate an unhindered investigation by police and judicial authorities. The death toll has risen to 12, with 16 individuals still reported missing. Search and rescue operations, supported by the TCG Işın and TCG Alemdar vessels from the Republic of Türkiye, remain ongoing.

As part of an expansion of administrative removals to protect the integrity of police and judicial investigations, Arıklı stated he would apply to the Assembly to lift his immunity to allow authorities to act freely if legal responsibility is found. Previous investigations have already led to the arrest of nine officials, including the ship’s captain. Additionally, a Turkish accident investigation team has arrived to assist with the inquiry.
