Portugal education updates: teacher payments, placements, and exam dispute

The Portuguese Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation has announced several major updates regarding the national education system. The government has authorized a payment of approximately 2.67 million euros to compensate teachers who graded national secondary school exams. This measure, which restores a payment type that had been discontinued in 2010, recognizes the professionalism of educators who managed grading through digital and physical formats despite various technical constraints.

In terms of staffing, over 20,000 teachers have been placed in schools for the upcoming academic year, primarily through internal mobility. This process filled 20,404 teaching slots, with a significant number of placements directed toward underserved regions such as Greater Lisbon, the Setúbal Peninsula, and the Algarve.

Separately, a legal dispute has emerged in Viseu involving Alves Martins Secondary School. The school delivered a computer used by a student, Martim, to the court following allegations of irregularities in his Portuguese national exam. While the school stated the delivery aimed to ‘dissipate any doubts,’ the student’s father, lawyer Paulo Duarte, asserted the equipment was handed over by judicial order following claims that parts of the exam were missing or improperly documented.
