Overview

By late July 2026 Portugal’s digitised secondary‑school exams continued to suffer grading irregularities. The Portuguese language component averaged 11.4 points and nearly 30 % of marks were failing; Portuguese Literature was the only subject with a negative mean. Of about 290 000 papers, 825 still show anomalies, 170 have no final grade and roughly 15 000 re‑assessment requests have been filed.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation responded with the Pré‑PCS platform, developed with Deloitte, to automate cross‑checks. By the weekend it had processed 69 001 papers, digitising 73 % and generating alerts. A new remuneration scheme pays teachers €1 per answer classified, €10 for each physically supported proof, €12 for each re‑appraised exam and €18 for classifications resulting from complaints; the scheme applies to both regular and special exam phases.

On 26 July the government announced contracts worth €2.65 million with Deloitte Technology to address the technical failures and confirmed the special exam session for 3–8 September. Over 20 000 re‑appraisal requests have been lodged, more than double the previous year, drawing criticism from the teachers’ union Fenprof for devaluing the profession. Minister Fernando Alexandre said a one‑week postponement of the secondary‑school start (currently 8–15 September) is being considered to ease teachers’ workload.

The 9th‑grade results released on 28 July showed a steep decline: Mathematics average fell to 49/100 with 52 826 of 96 853 students failing, while Portuguese averaged 55 points with a 40 % failure rate.
