Brazil Supreme Court manages Bolsonaro review and death threats

The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) and Superior Electoral Court (TSE) are managing several high-stakes legal and political developments. Minister Kassio Nunes Marques has indicated he will delay the analysis of Jair Bolsonaro’s criminal review requests until after the second round of elections to prevent electoral interference, intending to bring the matter to the STF Plenary rather than deciding monocratically. Meanwhile, Minister Luiz Fux has requested full access to confidential investigations involving Bolsonaro, including inquiries into fake news and digital militias, following an action by the Progressistas (PP) party questioning the legality of investigations led by Alexandre de Moraes.

In the electoral sphere, TSE ministers have ordered the removal of various campaign videos. Minister André Mendonça ordered the removal of content from deputies André Janones and Lindbergh Farias, as well as posts from Flávio Bolsonaro’s campaign, citing a lack of factual basis for claims regarding social program cuts and policy proposals. Similarly, Minister Nunes Marques ordered the removal of a video from Janja Lula da Silva’s social media profiles regarding Flávio Bolsonaro’s alleged policies.

Additionally, Minister Flávio Dino has disclosed a security report revealing thousands of messages containing death threats and plans for physical aggression against STF ministers, including himself, Gilmar Mendes, Cristiano Zanin, and Dias Toffoli. Dino emphasized that such intimidation must not influence judicial independence.
