Minister Kazuo Yanaka admits to controversial budget remarks

Kazuo Yanaka, Japan’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, has admitted to making controversial remarks regarding road budget allocations. During a Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) meeting in May, Yanaka allegedly stated that road budgets for Nasu-Karasuyama City and Nakagawa Town were significantly cut because their local leaders did not support him during the recent general election.

In a press conference held at the Diet on October 2, Yanaka clarified that his comments were “misleading” and intended to show his commitment to supporters, rather than an admission of direct interference. He denied requesting the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to reduce these specific budgets, claiming he was merely reporting on the results of budget inquiries he had made as a member of parliament.

Despite the controversy, Yanaka expressed his intention to remain in office and fulfill his duties. However, the incident has sparked significant political backlash. Opposition parties have signaled their intent to hold Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi accountable for her decision to appoint him, and the matter is expected to be a major point of contention in the upcoming extraordinary Diet session.
