Farmers protest in Den Bosch over nitrogen permit revocations
Farmers in the Netherlands are conducting widespread protests, including a significant demonstration in Den Bosch, against government nitrogen policies. The unrest is driven by a plan from the North Brabant provincial government to revoke the permits of five poultry farms to protect nearby Natura 2000 nature reserves from nitrogen pollution.
In addition to the local dispute in Brabant, farmers across the country are reacting to a national nitrogen policy letter from Agriculture Minister Jaimi van Essen. The proposed measures aim to drastically reduce agricultural nitrogen emissions by 2035. Farmers express deep concern that these regulations will lead to the forced closure or significant downsizing of many agricultural businesses, threatening the viability of rural communities and the local economy.
Prime Minister Rob Jetten has visited farmers in the region, acknowledging the significant personal impact these decisions have on farming families. While the government emphasizes the necessity of nature restoration, agricultural organizations and groups like the Farmers Defence Force (FDF) argue that the current approach lacks legal certainty and threatens the future of the sector.
