Ministry of Education launches flood relief and school closures in Bangkok
Thailand’s Ministry of Education has launched a multi-pronged emergency response to address severe flooding in Bangkok and surrounding provinces. Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong has implemented four urgent measures: ensuring educational continuity through flexible learning and makeup classes, providing financial aid for school repairs, deploying ‘Fix It Center’ vocational service units and mobile kitchens to assist citizens, and establishing a real-time monitoring dashboard.
In Bangkok, the Education Department has announced the temporary closure of schools in 15 high-impact districts from September 30 to October 2, 2026, to ensure student safety and allow for damage assessments. School directors in 35 other districts maintain the discretion to close institutions based on local conditions.
Relief efforts are currently active across several locations. Vocational colleges are operating mobile kitchens to distribute meals and relief bags, while schools such as Phaya Thai School and Prot Pittaya Payat have been designated as central hubs for food distribution and emergency shelters. Officials are also conducting on-site inspections to assess damage to school buildings and equipment to prepare for the upcoming second semester.
