Flooding and recovery efforts in Thailand

Overview

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding across Thailand, with severe impacts in Chonburi, Pattaya, and various Bangkok districts. Following the initial deluge, the Ministry of Education launched an emergency response to ensure educational continuity through flexible learning and makeup classes. Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong implemented measures including financial aid for school repairs, the deployment of ‘Fix It Center’ vocational units and mobile kitchens, and the establishment of a real-time monitoring dashboard. To ensure student safety, the Education Department announced the temporary closure of schools in 15 high-impact districts in Bangkok from September 30 to October 2, 2026, while directors in 35 other districts were given discretion to close institutions based on local conditions. Schools such as Phaya Thai School and Prot Pittaya Payat have served as central hubs for food distribution and emergency shelters. By September 30, Bangkok began a gradual recovery following a period where approximately 320mm of rain fell over three days. The flooding affected roughly 700,000 residents and 329,000 households in districts such as Lat Krabang, Bang Kapi, and Sai Mai. At least four deaths were reported in Bangkok, contributing to a national total of 23 fatalities since mid-September. Economic impacts have been substantial. An analysis by Rangsit University estimates losses in Bangkok at approximately 10.586 billion baht, with total economic losses across 48 Thai provinces estimated at 25.3 billion baht. While major roads are reopening, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt noted that residential areas acting as basins may require up to a week to fully recover. As of October 3, the crisis has intensified. Intense rainfall, with some areas receiving approximately 300mm in just two days, has transformed neighborhoods into stagnant lakes. Government reports indicate that flood-related fatalities, including drowning and accidental electrocution, have risen to approximately 40 people.
