Ministry of Food and Drug Safety warns of autumn food poisoning risks

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has issued a warning regarding food poisoning risks during the autumn season, noting that foodborne illness cases in autumn (September to November) average 73 cases annually, the second highest after summer.

Data from the past five years (2021–2025) shows that summer accounts for 36% of cases, followed by autumn at 24%, spring at 22%, and winter at 18%. Authorities warn that despite cooler mornings and evenings, high daytime temperatures can cause bacteria to multiply if food is left at room temperature.

To prevent illness, the Ministry recommends the ‘Son-Bo-Gu-Ga-Se’ guidelines: hand washing, maintaining proper storage temperatures, separating ingredients, thorough cooking, and washing/disinfecting. For outdoor activities, it is advised to use ice boxes, avoid leaving food in hot vehicles, and consume packaged foods or lunch boxes as soon as possible after purchase.
