South Korean authorities have intensified food safety, hygiene, and origin inspections targeting various sectors of the food industry. Initially, local authorities in regions such as Gwangju and Seoul focused on school-adjacent areas, monitoring food preparation establishments and unmanned stores. In late August, Gwangju City launched inspections targeting 177 establishments near schools, focusing on hygiene management and the sale of high-calorie or high-caffeine foods. Similarly, Seoul’s Yeongdeungpo-gu inspected 69 collective meal service facilities, including schools and kindergartens, to prevent food poisoning during the late summer heat.

Ahead of the Chuseok holiday, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) expanded efforts to a national scale. This included hygiene inspections of approximately 5,800 businesses and safety testing of 1,500 domestic food samples for pesticides, heavy metals, and pathogens. The MFDS also strengthened customs inspections for 33 categories of imported goods and monitored online marketplaces for deceptive health claims, such as ‘immunity enhancement’.

As the season progressed, the MFDS issued warnings regarding autumn food poisoning risks. Data from 2021–2025 indicates that autumn accounts for 24% of annual foodborne illness cases, the second highest after summer. Authorities cautioned that high daytime temperatures can still facilitate bacterial growth. To mitigate risks, officials promoted the ‘Son-Bo-Gu-Ga-Se’ guidelines, emphasizing hand washing, proper storage temperatures, ingredient separation, thorough cooking, and disinfection.
