Brazil expands SUS specialized care via mobile units and private partnerships

The Brazilian Ministry of Health is expanding specialized medical access through the ‘Agora Tem Especialistas’ program. This initiative utilizes mobile health units and partnerships with private and philanthropic institutions to reduce waiting lists within the Unified Health System (SUS).

Mobile units are currently providing specialized women's health services, including mammographies, biopsies, and ultrasounds, across various regions such as Dourados (MS), Bauru (SP), and several municipalities in Minas Gerais and Bahia. These units focus on the early diagnosis of breast and cervical cancer.

Additionally, the program is leveraging tax credits to contract private hospitals to perform hundreds of thousands of procedures nationwide. In Mato Grosso, over 9,000 procedures are planned, while in Bahia, an investment of R$ 49.9 million will facilitate over 18,000 consultations, exams, and surgeries in cities like Salvador and Feira de Santana. The strategy aims to centralize care through Integrated Care Offers (OCI), combining consultations and diagnostics into single service packages to prevent patient displacement.
