Heat advisories span multiple US regions as temperatures soar and indoor smoke persists

A heat advisory is in effect for parts of South King County, Washington, with temperatures expected to reach 88‑95 °F on Tuesday‑Wednesday. The National Weather Service urges residents to stay hydrated, use air‑conditioned spaces and check on vulnerable neighbors. Similar heat warnings cover portions of Colorado’s Kiowa County, where triple‑digit temperatures and gusty winds are forecast, and portions of southern Illinois, western Kentucky and southeast Missouri, where an Extreme Heat Warning predicts heat‑index values above 110 °F.

Local officials have opened cooling centers in response. The City of Federal Way, Washington, will operate the Federal Way Community Center as a free cooling site on July 21‑22, while the City of Renton announced similar measures for South King County residents.

In California, health officials have warned beachgoers of elevated bacteria levels at several Los Angeles County beaches ahead of a regional heat wave.

Separately, experts in Chicago caution that indoor air‑conditioning systems may still be recirculating particles from a recent Canadian wildfire smoke event, despite improved outdoor air quality. Upgrading HVAC filters to MERV 13 or higher is recommended to reduce health risks from lingering PM2.5.

These overlapping weather hazards—high heat, fire‑danger wind conditions, and lingering wildfire smoke—prompt public‑health advisories across the western and central United States.
