Minnesota reports at least six traffic fatalities over Labor Day weekend

At least six people died in various traffic accidents across Minnesota during the Labor Day holiday weekend. One fatal collision occurred on Highway 60 near Wabasha involving a 69-year-old motorcyclist from Pine Island, who was reportedly not wearing a helmet. Another crash on Highway 60 near Kenyon resulted in the death of an 84-year-old woman from Kansas. Additionally, a head-on collision involving a car and a minivan on Highway 53 near Orr claimed three lives.

The Minnesota State Patrol noted that the period from Memorial Day to Labor Day represents the “100 deadliest days” on state roads due to increased summer travel. While crashes are more frequent in winter, the summer months see higher rates of serious injury and fatalities due to higher speeds. Preliminary data for this year shows 132 traffic deaths between Memorial Day and September 3, compared to 151 during the same period in 2024. Officials cited speed, impairment, distraction, and lack of seatbelt use as the primary causes of fatal accidents.
