US Labor Day weekend traffic fatalities
Overview
Multiple U.S. states reported various traffic fatalities and accidents occurring during the 2026 Labor Day holiday weekend.
In Minnesota, at least six people died in accidents, including a motorcyclist and a head-on collision on Highway 53. State officials noted that the period from Memorial Day to Labor Day constitutes the “100 deadliest days” on state roads due to increased summer travel speeds.
Virginia reported 10 fatalities across eight crashes, including three pedestrians and three individuals killed in a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 66. As part of “Operation C.A.R.E.”, state police increased patrols, resulting in thousands of speeding and reckless driving citations.
In Mississippi, the Highway Patrol investigated 136 crashes and reported two fatalities. In Ohio, the State Highway Patrol reported 12 fatalities across 12 crashes, which officials noted was a significant decrease compared to the 27 deaths recorded during the same period in 2025. Ohio authorities also made 426 impaired-driving arrests during the enforcement period.
