Minnesota sues Texas Governor to force ICE agent's extradition
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has filed a federal lawsuit against Texas Governor Greg Abbott to compel the extradition of Christian Castro, a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. Castro is accused of second-degree assault and falsely reporting a crime following a January 14 shooting in Minneapolis, where he allegedly fired through a door and wounded Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis.
Ellison argues that Abbott has a mandatory constitutional obligation to sign the extradition warrant and has unlawfully withheld it for nearly three months. The lawsuit also seeks a temporary restraining order to prevent the Cameron County Sheriff from releasing Castro, noting that Texas law may require his release after 90 days of detention. Minnesota officials expressed concerns that Castro could flee to Mexico if released.
Governor Abbott has resisted the request, stating he does not trust Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The legal battle highlights a conflict over the accountability of federal officers and the administrative duties of state governors in interstate extradition processes.
