Minnesota wildfires trigger stricter burn bans and tourism decline

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources expanded outdoor burn restrictions across the state as dry vegetation, high temperatures and wind raised the risk of forest fires. The agency will not issue permits for burning branches, leaves, grass or other vegetal waste, urging residents to use alternatives such as composting. Officials note that more than 90 % of Minnesota wildfires are caused by human activity.

Concurrent wildfires have forced the closure of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, sharply reducing visitor numbers in Cook County and Ely. Local outfitting businesses report a dramatic drop in customers; the typical summer crowd has fallen to 20‑30 people per day, threatening the seasonal income that sustains the community through winter. While hiking trails remain open, the tourism sector, which accounts for about 80 % of the local economy, faces a significant shortfall.
