Boundary Waters wildfires shift to recovery

Overview

In early July 2026 the U.S. Forest Service closed much of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness as the Bear Trap, Thumb and Wolfpack fires surged. By mid‑July the entire BWCAW was shut down, evacuations ordered, and the Minnesota National Guard deployed after Governor Tim Walz declared a peacetime emergency. The closures devastated tourism, reduced daily visitors in Cook County to a handful, and forced campers and residents of Ely, Winton and nearby towns to flee. State agencies expanded outdoor burn bans and released a ten‑step safety guide for residents, while farmers struggled with extreme heat, poor air quality (AQI > 200) and crop damage.

By early August crews had partially contained all seven major fires, with the 37,845‑acre Bear Trap Fire at 40 % containment and the 17,327‑acre Thumb Fire at 57 % containment, bringing total burned area to over 69,000 acres. Ecologists warned that climate‑driven heat and drought could make such seasons more frequent.

On 5 August Governor Walz announced that the peacetime emergency will expire on 11 August, noting recent rain had dampened the flames and fire danger is now low to moderate across most of the state. Hot spots remain in the Superior National Forest and burn‑restriction orders continue in the northeast. The governor urged legislators to draft a relief package for affected communities, said damage assessments will proceed, and affirmed that resources could be re‑mobilized within 48 hours should conditions worsen as the fall fire season approaches.
