Minoxidil hair growth products pose toxicity risk to pets
The hair growth active ingredient Minoxidil, found in over-the-counter shampoos, serums, and lotions, poses a significant toxicity risk to dogs and cats. Even minute amounts of the substance can be fatal to pets.
Symptoms of poisoning include respiratory distress, a drop in blood pressure, and hypothermia. In dogs, the substance primarily affects the circulatory system, while in cats, it impacts the lungs. Cats are considered at higher risk because their smaller body mass leads to a higher relative dose if they lick residue from a human's hands.
Experts note that product packaging often lacks explicit warnings regarding pet safety. While some newer international batches include warnings, many standard products do not. Pet owners are advised to wash their hands thoroughly after application to prevent accidental ingestion by their animals.
