Minoxidil toxicity risk to pets
Overview
Minoxidil, an active ingredient in various over-the-counter hair growth products such as shampoos, serums, lotions, and conditioners, poses a significant toxicity risk to dogs and cats. Even minute amounts can be fatal. Cats are considered at higher risk due to their smaller body mass, which leads to a higher relative dose if they lick residue from a human’s hands or contaminated surfaces.
Symptoms of poisoning include respiratory distress, hypotension, hypothermia, and cardiovascular issues such as pulmonary edema, pleural effusion, reflex tachycardia, or congestive heart failure. In dogs, the substance primarily affects the circulatory system, while in cats, it significantly impacts the lungs. Other symptoms may include weakness, lethargy, ataxia, and tremors.
Exposure can occur through direct ingestion or indirect contact, such as pets licking residue from a human’s hands or contact with contaminated bedding and pillows. The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has issued an alert, noting that because some clinical symptoms are non-specific, cases may go unrecognized. The agency emphasized the need for reporting through the NotificaVET system.
Data from the ASPCA poison control center indicates that between 2013 and 2024, there were 701 reported cases of pets coming into contact with minoxidil. Experts note that many product packages lack explicit warnings. To prevent poisoning, owners are advised to wash their hands thoroughly after application, clean all used surfaces, store empty bottles securely, and immediately dispose of used applicators or cotton pads.
