Minoxidil in hair growth products poses toxicity risk to pets

Hair growth products containing the active ingredient minoxidil can be highly toxic to dogs and cats, even in minute quantities. The substance is commonly found in shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, and serums designed to treat thinning hair.

Data from the ASPCA poison control center indicates that between 2013 and 2024, there were 701 reported cases of pets coming into contact with minoxidil. Experts note that many pet owners are unaware of the danger because these products are intended for human use and often lack specific warnings for animals.

Cats are considered particularly vulnerable due to their smaller body weight, which leads to a higher relative intake of the toxin if they lick a person's hands or surfaces. To prevent poisoning, owners are advised to wash their hands thoroughly after application, clean all used surfaces, store empty bottles securely, and immediately dispose of used applicators or cotton pads.
