Miquel Cortés calls for reform of Guatemala's nomination commission model

Miquel Cortés, president of the nomination commission for Guatemala’s Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC), has called for a review of the current nomination commission model, stating that the mechanism is perceived by many as exhausted. While noting that current law mandates following the existing process, Cortés expressed support for future reforms.

The commission is currently in a critical phase of receiving files to select six candidates for the 2026-2030 term. As of late August, only three applications had been submitted. Cortés emphasized the need for an objective, transparent, and independent selection process, warning against external pressures from groups attempting to tailor evaluation criteria to specific candidates.

During recent sessions, the 27-member commission spent significant time debating the evaluation rubric. Cortés noted that while he advocated for more rigorous standards, concessions were made to reach an agreement. Disagreements also arose regarding specific requirements, such as registration with the Special Verification Intendancy (IVE) for independent auditors.
