Mirabai Chanu targets first Asian Games medal in Japan

Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu is focusing on securing her first Asian Games medal at the upcoming event in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Chanu has characterized the competition as being on an ‘Olympics’ level due to the presence of strong weightlifting nations including China, North Korea, Thailand, and Japan.

To prepare for the challenge and avoid previous setbacks caused by hip and back injuries, Chanu is following a strict training and recovery regimen. She is working alongside coach Vijay Sharma and American strength coach Dr. Aaron Horschig, with whom she conducts weekly video consultations to manage her conditioning.

Following her recent gold medal win at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Chanu immediately resumed training. While she is also strategizing for a move to the 53kg category for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, her immediate priority is the Asian Games competition scheduled for late September.
