Miranza eye‑care firm warns of solar UV damage to retina and skin
Dr. Lucía Galletero, ophthalmology specialist at the Miranda eye‑care company, has warned that exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation can cause serious damage to the retina and surrounding eye tissue. She notes that UV rays can trigger conditions such as maculopathy or solar retinopathy, cataracts, photo‑keratitis, pterygium, dryness, irritation and accelerated photo‑aging of the peri‑ocular skin, potentially leading to permanent vision loss or scarring.
Miranda recommends comprehensive protection: wear UV‑filter sunglasses from reputable sources, apply sunscreen to the skin around the eyes, and use specially certified glasses for safe viewing of the total solar eclipse on 12 August. The company will provide these eclipse glasses to patients, especially targeting children, outdoor athletes, individuals with light‑colored eyes or pre‑existing eye conditions. The advisory has been issued in Colombia and Mexico.
These recommendations aim to reduce the risk of irreversible eye injury during the upcoming eclipse and throughout the summer months when outdoor activity and reflected sunlight increase exposure.
