Mirpur-10 experiences violence during Dhaka eviction drive

Violent clashes, vandalism, and arson erupted in the Mirpur-10 area of Dhaka on Wednesday during an eviction drive by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to clear illegally occupied pavements.

The confrontation began when traders resisted the removal of stalls, leading to attacks on city corporation vehicles, some of which were set on fire. During the unrest, police deployed tear gas to manage the crowds, while traders responded by throwing bricks and stones. The violence resulted in injuries to both law enforcement officers and journalists.

By Thursday, the area had returned to an uneasy calm. DNCC workers worked to remove debris, including broken stalls and charred goods. While many footpaths have been cleared, some traders have already begun returning to the area due to financial necessity, stating they would vacate if provided with permanent alternatives. Significant damage was reported at the Hope Market area, where fires destroyed merchandise in several shops.
