Civil unrest and violence in Dhaka
Overview
Dhaka has experienced waves of violence, vandalism, and property damage. In late September, a 48-hour period saw widespread looting and the demolition of facilities, including a medical center in Mirpur-1 and a content creator’s studio. These incidents involved armed groups and prompted criticism of police inaction, leading the Home Minister to announce disciplinary measures against officials. Transparency International Bangladesh noted these events as “warning signs for the government” regarding extortion and occupation.
Following these incidents, violence erupted in the Mirpur-10 area during a Dhaka North City Corporation eviction drive aimed at clearing illegally occupied pavements. Clashes between traders and authorities resulted in arson, attacks on city vehicles, and injuries to journalists and law enforcement. While the area reached an uneasy calm after police deployed tear gas, some traders have attempted to return to the cleared locations due to financial necessity.
