Nolan Wells death spurs witness intimidation charges and controversial fundraiser
Nolan Wells, an 18‑year‑old Black student, disappeared during a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island, Mississippi, and his body was recovered on July 6. The cause and manner of death remain undetermined, with the state autopsy pending and an independent review inconclusive.
Federal investigators have filed three separate sets of charges linked to the case. Edward James Porter, a 40‑year‑old from Berwyn, Illinois, was charged with transmitting interstate threats to two witnesses and their families, including graphic threats to kill and dismember them. Joseph Alfredo Vasquez Dumarce, 27, was indicted for witness tampering after sending bomb‑threat messages to a witness’s children and workplace. Michelle Francine Edwards, a Cincinnati, Ohio resident, faced a federal interstate‑threat charge for making 29 bomb‑threat calls to Mississippi government offices.
A GiveSendGo campaign was launched by three white men—Dr. Benjamin Hudson, Jax Pitalo and Morgan Seymour—who had traveled with Wells. The fundraiser, titled “Stand with Nolan Wells’ targeted friends,” claims the men have received death threats and defamation from “race baiters” including civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump and activist Al Sharpton. The campaign raised roughly $90,000 for the men’s legal expenses.
Wells’s mother, Christine Wonsley, denied reports that her son was heavily drinking on the island and said the family will continue to seek justice. The investigation remains ongoing, with prosecutors preparing to present evidence to a grand jury and civil‑rights attorneys pursuing parallel inquiries.
