Wells death probe: family calls for thorough inquiry

Overview

Eighteen‑year‑old Nolan Xavier Wells vanished on July 4, 2026 during a Fourth of July boating trip to Horn Island, Mississippi. His body was recovered on July 6 and identified by DNA testing. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said drowning was the most likely cause, though no foul‑play evidence has been found.

Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, have rejected the preliminary drowning theory. They point to inconsistencies in friends’ statements, note that Wells’ phone was returned with Snapchat content erased and Life360 location data that conflict with accounts given by those who were with him. The family retained civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump, commissioned an independent autopsy in Washington, D.C., and received support from Rev. Al Sharpton and former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who helped fund the examination.

At press briefings in New York and on Good Morning America on July 10, the Wonsleys again demanded “honesty, transparency and a thorough investigation,” urging anyone with video, photos or other information from Horn Island on July 4 to come forward. The investigation remains open, and the case continues to fuel a national conversation about racial disparities in missing‑person inquiries.
