Misiones officials warn of El Niño‑related floods and water shortages

Provincial and municipal authorities in Misiones, Argentina, are preparing for the expected arrival of the El Niño weather pattern, which could bring intensified floods and droughts later this year. The sub‑secretary of Protection Civil, Enrique Parra, said the phenomenon may double typical October rainfall, raising the risk of sudden heavy rains that could overwhelm the Uruguay River basin.

Four municipalities—El Soberbio, Alba Posse, Panambí and San Javier—have been identified as having families most at risk. Coordination among federal agencies, provincial bodies, local governments, police, fire services and health officials is underway to develop early‑warning systems, evacuation plans and protection measures for vulnerable populations.
