Severe storms cause death and destruction in Misiones and Caazapá

Severe storms, including reports of a possible tornado, have caused significant destruction across Misiones, Argentina, and Caazapá, Paraguay. In the Misiones province, particularly in the rural areas of San Pedro between Cruce Caballero and Piñalito Sur, a high-intensity meteorological phenomenon destroyed homes and infrastructure. One farmer, identified as Demecio Monteiro, was found dead in a yerba mate plantation after his house was leveled by the winds.

In Misiones, more than 150 families have been affected, with reports of up to 22 houses and several sheds destroyed. The storms brought heavy rain, large hail, and wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h, causing power outages and disrupting communications. The provincial government has activated emergency assistance, providing materials like zinc sheets and wood to help families rebuild.

Simultaneously, the department of Caazapá in Paraguay experienced heavy storms, torrential rain, and large hail. Residents in districts such as Yuty, Fulgencio Yegros, Moisés Bertoni, and 3 de Mayo reported damage to roofs and vehicles, as well as power interruptions. Authorities in both regions are conducting assessments to determine the full extent of the material and human impact.
