Indonesia ferry fire kills five, leaves 41 missing

On 2 August 2026 a passenger ferry, KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2, caught fire off the northern coast of Madura Island in the Java Sea. The vessel was on a Surabaya‑to‑Makassar route and was carrying 271 people (232 passengers and 39 crew members).

The blaze began between 06:00 and 07:00 WIB and quickly engulfed the ship. Rescue teams from the national search‑and‑rescue agency Basarnas, the Indonesian Navy and several nearby vessels—including TB Hasnur 26, British Mentor and KN SAR 249 Permadi—evacuated 225 survivors. Five deaths have been confirmed and 41 people remain missing. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Authorities, including the Ministry of Transportation and the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure, have pledged a full inquiry and emphasized passenger safety as a priority. Ongoing search operations continue amid rough seas.
